Perhaps surprisingly, Dordogne has more to offer in this respect than many French rural areas. But an increasingly large percentage of visitors are also starting to take notice of the incredible birdlife in the region. Please see our dedicated page for Local Activities for further information.Every year, 200,000 Brits pass through Bergerac airport in the Dordogne, drawn in by the scenery, the cuisine and the long, warm summers (not to mention mild winters). There are dozens of other activities that are suitable for children in the Dordogne & Lot region, including kayaking, cycling, horse riding and swimming. There are also dedicated shows, such as the one at Parc Durandal, which is an excellent medieval-themed equestrian show set around a child-friendly story with many impressive stunts throughout (in French but designed to be easily followed by non-French speakers too). Many of the local medieval castles have excellent displays throughout the summer, including demonstrations of medieval life and combat. The complex also has adventure rides, boating and maze. The closest to the gites is Quercyland (named after the Causses Du Quercy Natural Park), which is a family-friendly adventure complex set around a large waterpark with two giant water slides and five solar-heated swimming pools. In addition to all the local rivers and lakes in which to swim, there are also excellent waterparks within the region. The family-friendly attraction has a variety of aquatic life, an alligator park, a reptile park, and various daily shows and displays for children. In addition to the various zoos and reserves with the Dordogne & Lot region, there is an aquarium, the Aquarium du Périgord Noir, north of the gites on the Dordogne river. Réserve Zoologique de Calviac is a reserve with around 200 animals of 30 different – and many rare – species, including lemurs, wallabies, owls, wolves, marmosets and squirrel monkeys. La Forêt des Singes (Monkey Zoo) is an attractive forest with around 150 Barbary Macaque monkeys roaming freely throughout 20 hectares regular feeding talks, guides, and educational videos are provided.
